Well Michael, thanks for writing in. What a blast! You opened a can of mysticism and intrigue with your double meaning/meaning of life, listening or living question. Good for you. Now, If you mean why are we HERE, as in why humans populate this planet, my best answer would be the Goldilocks zone. Read on...
Some planets, like Mercury..are too close to the sun and slowly roast like a kebab turning in front of an open flame. Some are too far, like Mars..a frozen brown reddish wasteland. We here on Earth are in a perfect spot for heat, light, an atmosphere and liquid water. Viola! Not too hot, not too cold, just right. Goldilocks and the three planets.
If you mean why DO we hear, then my guess is because we can. Hearing is one of the most important of the senses, and a difficult but not impossible thing to go without. The ear is a marvel of science. I never tire of learning about sound. If you believe it evolved from simple sensory, cool. If you think it's a gift from a higher power, that's cool too. But hear this, your hearing needs to last a lifetime. So treat your ears with respect. Keep em dry and clean. They are also good for hanging on to sunglasses, so keep some sunblock on em. Best of luck and thanks for dropping us a line.
